Ever since it was introduced to the UK market in 1995, the Vauxhall Vectra has been a firm favourite with many car owners. It was a hit on the market on launch and soon became one of the best-selling cars in the UK. Besides having an impressive interior, it also boasts smooth-running features, making it the perfect ride for many. The Vauxhall Vectra is available in a wide range of diesel and petrol engines, and buyers can opt for either a manual or an automatic gearbox. It’s also equipped with a powerful Vauxhall Vectra car battery, which is definitely built to last. With proper driving habits and good maintenance, your engine and Vauxhall battery will stay in good condition.
There are many reasons to choose the Vauxhall Vectra. Let’s take a closer look at this car to help you decide if it’s the right vehicle for you.
Engine and Performance
The Vauxhall Vectra comes in various engine choices, starting with an entry-level 1.8-litre petrol engine. The original version of this engine had 120bhp but was quickly replaced with a VVT version that boasted 138bhp. This is one of the most popular engines for the Vectra, offering good fuel efficiency. It is quiet for the most part but starts to feel the strain when four or more people are riding inside.
There are two other petrol options with better performance – a 2.0T version with 172bhp and a 2.8-litre V6 with 260bhp. These engines offer much smoother performance, but this comes at the cost of lower fuel-efficiency.
The diesel engine choices are even more popular, with a 1.9 CDTi available in 120bhp or 150bhp. This is considered the best engine for the Vectra line-up and has a strong in-gear pace. These versions both have an impressive 50mpg economy and emissions of 154g/km of CO2. Experts recommend going for the 150bhp version as this features significantly more pulling power.
The other diesel option for the Vectra is a premium 3.0 V6 CHTi with 181bhp. It’s pretty fast, capable of going from 0 to 60mph in 8.2 seconds. However, the extra cost doesn’t necessarily justify that when you compare its performance against the 1.9 version.
Value for Money
The Vauxhall Vectra gives buyers great value for their money. Although the entry-level model only comes with the standard features, higher-spec versions of the Vauxhall Vectra feature satellite navigation, climate control, and electronic stability control.
The running costs and maintenance are about the same for most Vectra models. You can expect around 40mpg depending on the gearbox and trim for the petrol engines, while the diesel-engine owners could see around 50mpg. 30mpg is optimistic for the Sri, while the 2.8 V6 Elite offers around 25mpg.
The high emissions from the V6 petrol Elite put it directly in the top VED bracket, costing you about £535 each year. The rest of the range has more reasonable costs, with the VED priced at about £190 to £305 yearly. The insurance groups are usually in the 15-22 range too.
What To Look Out For
We can’t ignore the fact that the Vauxhall Vectra is quite an old car now. Although this vehicle offers good performance, you may encounter some problems after many years of service.
Ex-fleet, ex-police, and ex-minicab models are usually the cheapest but take note that these have been subjected to what would be classed as tough conditions for any car. Be sure to check for any serious signs of damage before you buy.
Of course, proper, regular maintenance should always be carried out to keep the car performing as it should, just as with any car. Get your Vectra checked routinely and any time you encounter issues, and always keep an eye on the condition of your Vauxhall battery, as battery problems are the most common cause of car breakdowns. We recommend getting your battery tested at least twice a year so you have advance warning of when you need a replacement.
